About Oakland Youth Aspire

Oakland Youth Aspire (OYA) is a youth resource center open every Saturday 12:30-5pm in West Oakland. Our mission is to enrich the lives of youth by creating a fun and welcoming environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle and fosters open communication, empathy, and the development of interpersonal skills. Our vision is to help youth aspire to live healthy and productive lives, and develop fundamental skills to reach their fullest potential. Below is the description for the Health and Wellness Director board member position. All of our board members are involved in the program and need to co-lead the program at least 1 Saturday per month, and spend 10 hours a month on tasks to fulfill position responsibilities.

This position requires candidates to successfully complete an interview with board members and serve in a volunteer capacity at OYA for 4 Saturdays within a 3 month timeframe and complete one project prior to initiating board membership.

Position Description

The Oakland Youth Aspire Health and Wellness Director will provide leadership and coordination of OYA’s health and wellness programs, including the youth cooking program and food distribution program.

Responsibilities

  • To strategically build upon, lead and manage existing and new health programs fulfilling OYA’s mission of promoting healthy lifestyle and interaction among youth
  • To develop logic models and carry out evaluation activities to track the success of each health/wellness program, including establishing measures and data collection
  • To develop and implement culturally-appropriate, engaging, effective and successful health and wellness curriculum and activities
  • To teach, mentor and support youth, interns and volunteers directly engaged in health and wellness programs
  • Commit to 15 hours per month to fulfill position responsibilities including meetings and program attendance:
  • Attend monthly board meetings, weeknight 7pm-9pm
  • Participate in committee meetings as needed
  • Participate in back to school events and holiday events
  • Co-lead program 1x/month from 12pm-5pm

$300 annual board fees are recommended

Skills and Experiences

  • Passion for youth development and experience working with youth and adults from a wide range of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds
  • Flexible and collaborative; strong listening and communication skills
  • Strong leadership and management skills; initiative and ability to work independently
  • Resourceful, creative and insightful; ability to think and plan strategically
  • Bachelor’s degree in the health sciences field including public health, nutrition, dietetics, kinesiology; documented experience and success with planning, implementing and evaluating health/wellness programs a plus
