Purpose:
City of Mesa Youth Sports has developed a Jr Recreation Leader program that allows high school students the opportunity to volunteer in our programs to gain a variety of job related experiences that will help prepare them as they continue their education and career paths. All opportunities include a parent/volunteer orientation, volunteer training, mentorship with staff members throughout their volunteer season, and regular check ins with Youth Sports supervisors to ensure students are receiving proper positive and constructive feedback. As the Jr Recreation Leader program continues to develop season after season, additional mentorship and training will be provided for students.
Important Dates for Fall 2015:
*December 1, 2015: Applications available for students
*January 8, 2016: Applications due to Youth Sports
*January 12, 2016: Applicants notified via email if selected for interview
*January 20-21, 2106: Interviews
*January 22, 2016: Applicants notified via email if selected for volunteer position
*January 28: MANDATORY Volunteer Rec Leader Meeting
5:30-6:15pm at City of Mesa Parks and Recreation Main Office-Parent and volunteer orientation
6:15-8:30pm at City of Mesa Parks and Recreation Main Office -Volunteer training
Volunteer Job Description:
*All students currently enrolled in high school may apply. Perfect volunteer opportunity for any student regardless of experience. Diverse backgrounds welcome.
*Individuals with disabilities who are currently enrolled in their school’s transition program are encouraged to apply and a "buddy" may assist them in this activity.
*Volunteer responsibility opportunities include scorekeeping, sports instruction, observing/assisting with conducting activities, participating/working special events including set up and tear down, observing/aiding/supervising children, any additional appropriate tasks assigned. This position requires a moderate to high level of physical activity.

Volunteer Seasons:
*Fall: October-December (application and meeting/training in September)
*Winter: February-March (application and meeting/training in January)
*Spring: April-May (application and meeting/training in March)
Volunteer Opportunities for Winter 2016:
Youth Basketball Games
Responsibilities include scorekeeping, observing/assisting/conducting activities, set up and tear down, observing/aiding/supervising children, any additional appropriate tasks assigned. This position requires a moderate to high level of physical activity.

Special Events
Responsibilities include observing/assisting/conducting activities, set up and tear down, observing/aiding/supervising children, any additional appropriate tasks assigned. This position requires a moderate to high level of physical activity.
ð Dates TBA once volunteer assignments have been determined
Volunteer Placement:
*Students must volunteer for the entire program’s season at a time for approximately 3-4 hours per week.
*Students may continue season after season if they would like to gain more experience and earn enough hours to possibly be considered for a paid position. Youth Sports will evaluate students after each season regarding this matter.
*Opportunities are available at various locations throughout Mesa. Placement depends on the student’s interest and schedule/availability as well as Youth Sports’ program schedule/needs for that season.
*Students must provide their own transportation to and from their shift.
