Mission: Responding to a critical societal need, Aquinas Literacy Center empowers adults by providing English as a Second Language instruction through individualized tutoring in an environment that respects and reverences individuals. We enable learners to transform their lives by acquiring skills to become successful parents, productive workers and responsible citizens.
History: Aquinas Literacy Center (ALC) is a community-based organization located in McKinley Park on the southwest side of Chicago. Since 1996, ALC has served the immigrant community by offering free individualized instruction in the English language. Using trained, volunteer tutors, Aquinas serves over 200 learners annually. Learners participate in weekly tutoring sessions, conversation groups, writing workshops, book clubs, computer-based instruction and computer literacy workshops. ALC is sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters.
Purpose: The Marketing Volunteer/Intern will oversee the design and production of all marketing materials. The Marketing Volunteer/Intern will create and implement a strategy to deepen Aquinas’ reach by raising awareness of our program, mission, impact in the community, and need for volunteers. The Marketing Volunteer/Intern will be responsible for expressing our brand and unique value to our various audiences across all channels including press, website, marketing materials, and special events.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Marketing Intern:
- Design specific branding for Aquinas’ 20 th Anniversary year (2016)
- Redesign existing brochure
- Create flyers and other marketing materials for specific audiences and purposes, including:
- Flyers to attract students
- Flyers to attract potential Volunteer ESL Tutors that target specific groups, such as retired persons, young adults, and college students
- Flyers that advertise all available volunteer positions at Aquinas
- Flyers to internally promote Aquinas events
- Updating materials on the display board for volunteer recruitment fairs
- Regularly write and distribute press releases for Aquinas
- Oversee maintenance and updates to Aquinas website: generating new content, updating calendars and news, photos, media, etc.
- Develop an initial marketing strategy and timeline
- Work with Executive Director and Development Intern to craft content for fundraising appeals and materials
- Research appropriate and affordable email marketing service to begin utilizing
- Attend all Aquinas events
- Manage creation of photo and video content; occasionally photograph and/or video record daily activities and events
- Reports to the Executive Director
Required Qualifications:
- At least 18 years of age
- Some college education or current enrollment in college
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Publisher
- Highly organized with ability to prioritize
- Extremely detail oriented; exceptional proof-reading skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Interested in the mission of Aquinas
Preferred Qualifications:
- Fluency in Spanish or Mandarin
- Graphic design and video-editing skills
- Experience with tutoring, teaching, working with adults, and/or working with immigrants
Time Commitment and Compensation:
The Marketing Volunteer/Intern commits one semester (12 weeks) for 8-20 hours per week. At least 50% of hours must be completed on-site at 3540 S. Hermitage Ave. in Chicago. The Marketing Volunteer/Intern must attend all Aquinas events. Aquinas Literacy Center is open Mondays through Thursdays 9am to 8pm, and staff are at the Center from 9am to 4pm on Fridays.
Aquinas Literacy Center will do its best to accommodate any school and/or degree program requirements. This is an unpaid internship.
The right candidate will be considered to perform all work remotely. Preference will be given to Chicago area candidates.

Here at Aquinas Literacy Center we strive to help change lives word by word in an effort to help our students share their story and engage more fully in the world around them. We offer a variety of programming to help students in their learning. The Literacy Center is a place that offers hospitality, opportunity for education and learning, and a community of learners and supporters. We invite you to join us as a volunteer! In particular, Aquinas Literacy Center is seeking volunteers who can commit 90 minutes per week as an ESL tutor. Tutor training is provided, and knowledge of a second language is not necessary.
