Project Description
Within Oxnard, there is a scarcity of asset-based educational support services, particularly holistic, bilingual services that engage children and parents together and value diversity and adaptive learning. El Centrito’s STEAM Academy is unique in the area, offering students a hands-on, project-based curriculum and partnering closely with parents to engage in their child’s learning and monitor their progress.
The goals of the STEAM Academy and the Parent Promoters of Education projects align closely with the overarching AmeriCorps VISTA aim to alleviate poverty, as the project targets a high-poverty area that experiences an accumulation of risk factors that, lacking intervention, can perpetuate poverty. As home to a predominantly Latino and immigrant population, Oxnard’s future success hinges on its ability to create equitable opportunity structures that boost educational outcomes and confidence for Latino and ELL families so that they rise to their fullest potential and work towards a prosperous future.
