HopeWorks is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which helps low-income, Snohomish County residents, achieve self-sufficiency through social enterprises that provide training and pathways to living-wage jobs. In particular, HopeWorks targets individuals who now have a stable, affordable place to live through housing programs created in the County. The HopeWorks model is to establish social enterprise businesses embedded with training and skill building designed to produce income progression opportunities over time. HopeWorks was originally formed as the employment branch of Housing Hope, a 28-year-old non-profit which promotes and provides a continuum of safe, decent, affordable housing and necessary related services to very low income and low income residents of Snohomish County and Camano Island.

This VISTA position collaborates with the HopeWorks leadership team to develop and grow their existing social enterprises designed to create career pathways for low-income residents (interns) of affordable housing, especially those with experience being homeless. The VISTA Volunteer works in an entrepreneurial environment at HopeWorks Station collaborating with fellow staff members and community resource persons to grow GroundWorks, a landscaping company, ReNewWorks, a furniture consignment store, and CafeWorks, a coffee shop. Development plans will generate both greater margin (business revenue) and mission (interns served) outcomes.

The social enterprise development project will require the VISTA Volunteer to participate in developing business strategies, operational plans, internship system and community outreach. As many of the social enterprises at HopeWorks are in start-up mode, the VISTA will work in a dynamic atmosphere with shifting priorities. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a fluid environment.
