Being a Y READS volunteer entails mentoring/tutoring a small group of 2-4 students on a lesson that has been prepared for you. The lessons could be but are not limited to, reviewing sight words or reading a passage and answering questions with the students assigned to you. In a small-group environment, you can help students develop positive self-esteem and improve academic performance.

Description
The Y READS! Program seeks to close the gap in students’ reading performance and the State of Florida’s reading performance expectations. It’s is an excellent volunteer opportunity because it allows the volunteer to have a positive involvement in a child’s life, have a practical and enriching experience working with at risk children, and will provide the volunteer with an educator experience in a diverse and high need community.
Y READS! Program is held Monday through Thursday from 2:45 to 4:30 at Twin Lakes Academy Elementary. Sessions will be grouped: Monday/Wednesday (1st grade) and Tuesday/Thursday (2nd grade). We ask for a commitment of at least 1 session per week and tutors can also volunteer 1 day or up to 4 days a week. The program runs until the end of the school year at those elementary schools.
