Our award-winning ESL for Health class is having a Health Fair Wednesday, December 9, from 6-8pm at St. Mary's Hospital. The Health Fair is an opportunity for adults in the program to meet with a medical provider to discuss their health habits and receive specific recommendations for how to live a healthier lifestyle and prevent chronic disease. Students will also have the opportunity to attend an exercise workshop and a stress reduction workshop to learn new skills and develop a plan for a healthier life. This is the capstone project for students to put into practice everything they have learned this semester in English for Health --and we need your help!
Our class has about 12 regular students, primarily with an English level of intermediate or higher. (All instruction is given in English; volunteers must be fluent in spoken English.) We are looking for friendly and professional-presenting volunteers for the following roles:
- An exercise workshop leader able to provide students with information about exercise, including benefits of exercise, how much exercise is needed, and the best way to incorporate exercise into students' busy lives. Volunteer should also teach students specific exercises, or even an easy exercise routine. This volunteer will also help students develop a personal exercise plan.
- A stress-reduction workshop leader to teach students relaxation techniques, including but not limited to: breathing exercises, mindfulness/meditation, and yoga. Volunteer should teach students a few gentle yoga poses that they can do at home or work.
Anyone interested in one or both of these positions need to email shawn@litnetwork.org with an outline of your experience working with adults from other cultures, what Health Fair role you're interested in playing, and why. Thanks!
