Literacy Advance holds Family Literacy events in partnership with elementary schools and other community-based organizations in the greater Houston area, to encourage parents to read to their children, and help them acquire both the skills and confidence to make reading a part of their everyday lives. Parents attend a presentation on family literacy while their children take part in literacy-based activities; at the end of the event, each child is given a free book with which to start their home library, or to add to their existing collection. Each Family Literacy event aims to be informal, helpful, fun and friendly!

Family Literacy Helpers may assist with registration, read to children, help with craft activities, and/or hand out new books to children. Please note, a background check must be completed before attendance is confirmed. For a list of specific dates and schools, please visit our website at: http://www.literacyadvance.org/Volunteer/Current_Volunteer_Needs/#Vol2
