ORGANIZATION: Communities In Schools of Tacoma

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to serve as 2nd grade reading mentors at Whitman Elementary school! Once a week, volunteers will meet with 5-7 students for 30-45 minutes of reading. Volunteers will either read to students or listen as the students read. With this intervention program, we aim to help struggling students reach grade level reading by 3rd grade.

Day & Time: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays between the hours of 12:45 and 2:00 pm.

Not only is this program designed to help 2nd graders who are falling behind in reading catch up to their peers, but also to help foster a love of reading among the students.

Requirements:

  • Must pass a WA State Patrol Background Check
  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Passion for working with children
  • college students encouraged to apply

Communities In Schools is part of the 5th largest youth development organization in the country. We are the only ones proven to increase graduation rates AND decrease dropout rates.

We serve as the bridge between the student and the community, bringing in resources that help break down the barriers that students have to be successful in school.
