KAVI is looking for summer mentors and camp leaders to run our Young Ones Summer Innovative Camp. Young Ones Summer Innovation Camp, and is named after KAVI champion, and fallen staff member Willis Young. KAVI YOSIC is a 6 week summer camp incorporating engineering and design principles with social awareness. The program will use S.T.E.A.M. (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math) principles to develop viable, youth perspective plans, which tackle various social and environmental issues plaguing our communities. There is currently a major deficit of under represented minorities in S.T.E.A.M. professions. Having a diverse group of facilitators (Undergraduate/Graduate engineering, art/design/architectural, public health and social science students) can help to encourage participants to explore S.T.E.A.M. related professions early on, thus increasing the possibility of entering a S.T.E.A.M. related career but at the same time remaining socially conscious and relevant. This increases S.T.E.A.M. participation among urban students of color. In edition, KAVI YOSIC serves as a framework for establishing a potential pipeline between the universities from which our facilitators come from and the students.

Mission Statement
Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI) is a hospital, school, and community-based organization that provides young people with productive and safe alternatives to engaging in interpersonal violence by empowering youth and cultivating their untapped potential.
Description
School Program:
Prevention and intervention of youth violence are essential to the core goals of the KAVI program. The programs consist of weekly workshops and activities that focus on: Identity Exploration, Self-Governing, Conflict Resolution and Communication, Peer Mediation, Goal Development and Critical Thinking, Life Skills Development, and Fitness. Our staff includes outreach workers that are familiar with the inherent challenges of life in central Brooklyn. KAVI currently has programs at the High School for Human Rights, the High School for Public Service, and Eagle Academy.
Hospital:
Hospital responders at Kings County Hospital work directly with victims of invasive wounds. These helpful responders work with victims as mediators, resource providers and general support systems. We also provide support groups for violently-injured teens.
Community:
KAVI provides the KAVI Young Ones (YO) afterschool program for students in grades 6-8. KAVI YO addresses many of the topics that our high school programs address. KAVI YO meets after school twice a week at the hospital.
Volunteer testimonials:
"I volunteer with KAVI because I wanted to help young women of color reach their full potential and help them understand that they can be agents of change in their own lives and communities." - KAVI Queens 2015-2016 Workshop Facilitator
