Volunteers of America Massachusetts

Volunteers of America Massachusetts is looking for 1-2 volunteer mentors for its program to help inmates re-enter society. The Turning Point Re-Entry Program (TPRP) provides a broad range of intensive case management services and aftercare to break the cycle of crime and violence experienced by residents of Essex County, Massachusetts.

This is an exciting, flexible opportunity to work with some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community, reaching out to those who have been incarcerated and helping them find the skills, tools and resources they need to change their lives.

As a Mentor, you will work with individuals as they face concerns over education, employment, substance use, mental health counseling, housing, health, and family support. You will act as a positive role model to your client, offering support and guidance as they move forward in their transition to civilian life. You will also help identify community resources to help satisfy your client’s needs, and help them take advantage of the resources available to them.

We are seeking compassionate, energetic, empathetic, and positive individuals who have a strong commitment to social justice. While education requirements are not necessary, past experience working with ex-offenders, or people who are in acute need of services, or people who have co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders is preferred. Mentors should be computer-literate, able to work independently, have good reading and writing skills, and have experience maintaining confidentiality. Mentors should be available after regular business hours.

Mission Statement

Volunteers of America, Massachusetts is a national nonprofit, spiritually based organization providing local human service programs and opportunities for individual and community involvement. In Massachusetts, we run comprehensive programs for abused and neglected adolescents, adults and youth in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, and elders in need of housing and health services. We reach out to those most in need, especially the vulnerable, the hardest to serve, and those facing multiple challenges. Our programs are designed to rehabilitate, not just treat symptoms. Our professional staff and volunteers are committed to this comprehensive mission to serve the whole person.

Description

Volunteers of America has over 90,000 volunteers serving over 2 million people nationwide. The goal of Volunteers of America is to provide people with the help they need to make positive changes in their lives. Here in Massachusetts, we serve over 2,500 people each year. Our focus is at-risk youth, adults in recovery from substance abuse and elders in need of housing and health services. We invite volunteers to share their individual talents to our programs teaching basic computer literacy, arts and crafts, parenting techniques, theatre, creative writing, personal finance and career building skills, as well as general tutoring, friendly visits with the elderly, musical performance and personal grooming- hairstylists, manicurists etc. We are open to any opportunity volunteers wish to provide.
