Centro Hispano Marista Volunteer Position Title: Typing Workshop Coordinator

Time Commitment: 1 hour per week (6-7 pm on Tuesday evenings)

Duration of Commitment: February 2, 2016-May 24, 2016

Context: The Centro Hispano Marista serves over 600 adult Latino students who seek to pass the GED exam in order to obtain their high school equivalency diploma. We offer Social Studies, Language Arts, Science, and Math classes in both English and Spanish to these students. As the GED Exam is now taken online, offering students the chance to practice their typing and computer literacy skills is essential.

Responsibilities: The GED Typing Workshop Coordinator’s primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Attending and participating in pre-service training and orientation
  • Setting up the computer lab and working with students in the lab on a weekly basis
  • Monitoring 1-3 high school volunteers who can assist with the workshop on a weekly basis
  • Encouraging assigned students as they progress towards passing the GED, and sharing concerns about specific students with the Program Director

Qualifications: Ideal candidates for this volunteer position should:

  • Have working profiency (intermediate or higher) in English and in Spanish
  • Possess a positive and determined attitude, as well as the ability to work with diverse populations
  • Be very comfortable and familiar with computers and typing
  • Be reliable, flexible and able to adapt to high-paced and changing circumstances

Description

Centro Hispano Marista provides GED preparation classes for adults. GED, or General Educational Development test, certifies the equivalency of high school education. When a student works on their high school equivalency, their children and those around them are more likely to earn their diploma on time, making Centro’s impact multi-generational.

Centro Hispano Marista is a ministry of the Society of Mary. Since 1901, the Society of Mary has shared its educational mission with thousands of students and their families in the Atlanta area. Marists are inspired "to think, judge, feel and act as (Mary) in all things." The Marist Way core values include discipleship, simplicity, humility, hidden and unknown, simplicity, hospitality and inclusiveness.

Centro Hispano Marista intends to reach out to and uplift those marginalized by poverty in great need of an education following the Marist Way. It is a key part of the program to offer a welcoming environment for students regardless of their background or immigration status to complete their educational goals in an affordable way and with compassion.
