Position:

Grant Writing Associate

Description:

Grant writing can be a fast-paced profession. Grant writers may work on several projects at once under tight deadlines. Government policies and online submission processes change frequently. The availability of funding also fluctuates, so grant writers must develop a diversified network of funding organizations. Nonprofit grant writers prepare grant proposals, beginning by performing research. In developing their proposals, grant writers must familiarize themselves with an organization's programs, goals and financial needs. They also look into potential funding sources. After compiling all the information they need, grant writers compose and send their proposals. Grant writers must also keep careful records to track their proposals.

Duties:

  • Developing and writing grant proposals to local, state, federal governments; foundations; and other grant-making organizations.

  • Persuasively communicating the organization’s mission and programs to potential funders.

  • Assembling and submitting grant requests, including letters, proposals, budgets, and presentations.

  • Establishing and maintaining personal contact and relationships with local, state, federal government officials; foundation contacts; and program officers.

  • Ensuring prompt acknowledgement of awarded funding.

  • Maintaining calendar to ensure timely submission of letters of inquiry, proposal deadlines, and reports.

  • Conducting prospect research including internet searches.

  • Prioritizing projects to keep multiple projects moving in a timely manner; meet deadlines; and manage supplemental material required for proposals.

  • Providing writing support for major donor and individual contribution letters and acknowledgements.

Expectation:

Must craft funding proposals in a clear and compelling manner. Must have excellent writing, analytical, and research skills are essential. Must be self-motivated, detail oriented, and highly-organized, and have experience using online databases and other sources to locate biographical, financial, and philanthropic information. A high level of computer literacy required. Must possess an ability to work well under pressure and the ability to seek and synthesize information and communicate in a compelling and succinct form. Must have a solid understanding of budgets as they relate to proposals and grants. Prefer a Bachelor’s degree and 3 -5 years of relevant experience.
