AmeriCorps Member teaching Students
AmeriCorps members tutor 1 or 2 students at a time in 30 minute blocks throughout the school day.

AmeriCorps Programs are similiar to the Peace Corps, where members volunteer for one-year in service to a community. The mission of the AmeriCorps, Monterey County United for Literacy program is to enable Monterey County children to read well and independently by the end of the third grade so that they can read to learn in the fourth grade and beyond. The program targets children in Kindergarten through 4th grade in Salinas and South Monterey County. Members will provide one-to-one literacy tutoring to students in Kindergarten through fourth grade in Salinas, King City, Soledad and greater Monterey County to help them improve their fluency and comprehension. Tutoring sessions will include: reading and discussing books; listening to students read a variety of texts at his or her independent reading level; promoting reading through individually and teacher-designed activities; engaging in phonemic awareness skill building exercises; and expanding students' knowledge base through the written word. Tutoring will take place throughout the entire school year and summer school, during and after school hours. Orientation, ongoing trainings, and most service events take place in Salinas. Training for tutors is comprehensive, on-going, and focuses on research-based tutoring strategies. Members also engage in community service activities as a team on evenings and weekends at least twice a month.

Program Benefits : living allowance is $13,100/term , Training , Education award upon successful completion of 1700 hour service , Health Coverage , Stipend , Childcare assistance if eligible .

Mission Statement

Description

The program targets children in Kindergarten through 4th grade in Salinas, Greenfield, and King City school districts. Members will provide tutoring to about 25-30 students per tutor to help them improve their English language development, vocabulary acquisition, fluency and comprehension AND develop the habit of independent reading. Each member is assigned to one of about 14 different school sites where the program operates. Students receive 30 minute tutoring sessions a minimum of three times per week. Training is comprehensive, on-going, and focuses on research-based tutoring strategies. Members also engage in community service activities as a team on evenings and weekends at least twice a month.
