The Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse, a program of the Lower East Side Ecology Center, is the largest non-municipal provider of e-waste recycling services in New York City. The warehouse accepts all varieties of consumer electronics, and reuses/recycles them in an environmentally and socially responsible way. Any New York resident, small business, or non-profit organization can drop-off unwanted electronics at this permanent e-waste collection center.
The Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse hosts a volunteer program that allows individuals and groups to contribute to the e-waste reuse/recycling services that are provided by the warehouse. This program provides volunteers with information about e-waste, its impact on the environment, and how to better handle its reuse and recycling. Volunteers will provide assistance to all the operations that allow the warehouse to continue providing e-waste services to New Yorkers.
Examples of duties include:
- Assisting with e-waste intake
- Sorting e-waste into categories
- TVs
- Mobile devices
- Printers/scanners/faxes
- Computers
- Preparing e-waste for recycling
- Testing e-waste for reusability
- Cleaning reusable and vintage electronics
- Cleaning the warehouse and workstations
- Performing data entry

Description
The Lower East Side Ecology Center, also known as Outstanding Renewal Enterprises, Inc., was founded in 1987. It was one of the first organizations to offer community-based recycling and composting programs in New York City, facilitated by providing innovative recycling drop-off centers. Today, the Ecology Center offers services and education for a range of environmental subjects: organics collection/composting, electronic waste recycling, and stewardship of public green spaces.
The organization focuses on providing opportunities for all New Yorkers to learn about the environmental issues that the city faces. Furthermore, it also provides resources and solutions for addressing these issues.
