Free training at The Federation for Children with Special Needs office in Charlestown!
Are you interested in supporting students in your community?
You can help by volunteering to become a Special Education Surrogate Parent (SESP) for a student in MA state custody who requires special education supports and whose parents are unknown or unavailable. These children depend on SESPs to protect their legal right to a free and appropriate education. Many of these students have experienced chronic trauma throughout childhood, and thus may have social/emotional issues that impact their ability to learn and their performance in school.
SESPs serve as appointed decision-makers that have the legal authority of a parent or legal guardian to attend special education team meetings, approve or reject Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and if necessary, file complaints or appeals. They may meet with their assigned student or observe them in the classroom, receive all progress reports and report cards, and attend IEP meetings as an acting surrogate parent. SESP volunteers help protect their students’ educational rights and help them receive appropriate school services. On average, the time commitment is only 30-40 hours a year.
The Recruitment, Training & Support Center and the Federation for Children with Special Needs (RTSC) hosts free Orientation Trainings throughout the state where potential volunteers will learn about the role of an SESP, how traumatic experiences can impact learning, and how to incorporate the appropriate supports into the IEP. one, and to give all those volunteers the training and support they need to
create the best possible educational experiences for the children they serve.
Description
The Recruitment, Training and Support Center for Special
Education Surrogate Parents (RTSC) recruits volunteers to attend Team meetings,
sign Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and monitor the educational
progress of children in state custody whose parents cannot. The RTSC also offers all Special Education
Surrogate Parents continued support and training throughout their volunteer
experience.
