Mission Statement

Kids In Focus is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to empowering and inspiring at-risk youth to reach their potential using photography to ignite their imagination and build their sense of confidence and value. Tapping into the power and universal language of photography, Kids In Focus enables children to gain a new perspective on themselves and their environment. The kids’ eyes are opened to their own potential for creativity and success and to new possibilities of connecting with others and the world.

Description

Each program is a nine-week journey, starting with the kids receiving a free camera. The following six weeks, the kids are mentored by professional photographers. Kids photograph on their own in their home environments as well as with their mentors on field trips. The last three weeks are spent preparing for a public exhibit of their images. The kids write biographies as well captions to accompany their images. Their photographs are also included in a book that they receive, memorializing their experience. The program culminates in an opening night gala where the kids, their families and the community gather in celebration. The children are recognized and appreciated by others, igniting a feeling of pride and accomplishment. The exhibit remains on public display for several weeks. The kids then join the ongoing community of Kids in Focus, with the mentors and fellow student alumni, who continue to support one another and share their work on into the future through continuing projects.
