Are you a fan of the outdoors or being in nature? Would you like to find out how you can become more involved in helping to keep Baltimore County’s natural areas beautiful? Now is your opportunity to take an active role to positively impact the environmental and restorative efforts within the Gunpowder Watershed. Through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Baltimore County, volunteers are now being recruited to serve with the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy (GVC) in order to mobilize people and resources to care for the lands, waters and character of the Watershed for present and future generations.

Over its 25 year history, the GVC has planted over 25,000 trees in areas such as Gunpowder Falls State Park, Loch Raven Reservoir, Baltimore County Recreation and Parks lands, and other community areas. The GVC has also worked with the State of Maryland, Baltimore County land preservation programs, and has been an RSVP and Baltimore County Department of Aging Partner for over 8 years. Currently, 1465 acres are preserved in conservation easements, thereby assuring that these valuable and beautiful resources will be protected in perpetuity - for our children and their children.

Whether you are an individual or a part of a community group, school or business, the GVC provides a diverse array of volunteer opportunities for your consideration. You may desire to participate in one day events, i.e., tree plantings, stream clean ups or rain barrel workshops or ongoing opportunities. Ongoing programs options would include Stream Watch, Project Clean Stream, Rain Gardens, Bay Wise Landscaping, Educational Outreach and much more. Within the GVC programs, volunteers provide education on environmental issues, promote conservation in local communities, and work with land preservation efforts throughout the Baltimore County region.

Senior RSVP volunteers have played a significant leadership role in the GVC by serving as Crew Chiefs for tree plantings by managing other volunteers and serving as the lead organizers for many events associate with major tree plantings. In addition, RSVP volunteers train, educate and supervise other volunteers protect and provide wildlife habitat restoration throughout Baltimore County. Currently, the GVC has 3 active RSVP volunteers serving as Crew Chiefs but there is space for many more volunteers! At this time, the GVC and RSVP are recruiting for the following senior volunteer opportunities: (5) Crew Chiefs, (1-2) Treasury Assistants, and (2) Administrative Assistants.

To learn more about GVC volunteer opportunities and how you can become involved as an RSVP volunteer, please contact the RSVP office by calling 410-887-3101 or emailing volunteers@baltimorecountymd.gov
