RSVP

The Literacy Council of Frederick County has a critical need for volunteer tutors. Nearly 20% of the adult U.S. population is functionally illiterate. In Frederick County, about 10% of adults do not have a high school education and 34% of the foreign-born population has trouble speaking English. As a volunteer tutor, you can help change these distressing statistics. You will assist adults in Frederick County with reading, writing and English-speaking skills needed to achieve personal goals and integrate more fully into the community. When adults reach their educational goals, their families and communities grow stronger.

Volunteers average about one to two hours per week working with their student and a like amount of time in preparation for each session. Orientation sessions will be held in November at 110 East Patrick St. Frederick. For those volunteers that attend an orientation, a two-day training workshop will be offered in January. Both days of training as well as attendance at the information session are required for certification. Teaching experience or knowledge of a foreign language is not required to volunteer. Volunteers must be fluent in English, have a general sense of enthusiasm, dedication, flexibility and be culturally sensitive with a strong desire to help. One year of dedication to this role is required.
