Introduction: The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) has an opportunity for a Special Events Intern to assist us with the Walk for Bladder Cancer, our national event that raises awareness about bladder cancer as well as well as funds for critical research, education and support programs for patients and their families. As a member of BCAN’s team, the student intern will have the opportunity to develop skills and gain experience in fundraising, development, event planning, and community relations. This is a great opportunity to gain practical experiences and develop essential skills that will prepare the intern for nonprofit or corporate careers.
About the Special Events Internship: The special events intern will be working closely with the event coordinators. The student chosen for the internship, which runs from January through May, 2016, will aid in the promotion of BCAN’s signature fundraising and awareness event. Responsibilities include:
• Assisting with logistical tasks (i.e. obtaining event permits, updating event websites).
• Assisting with event public relations (i.e. press releases, social media, etc.).
• Aiding in acquiring in-kind donations.
• Preparing and organizing materials prior to the event.
• Attending the local event in the DC metro area.
• Clerical duties including completing mailings and filing.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: For this position we are looking for a motivated student intern with the following qualifications:
• Demonstrated interest in BCAN’s mission.
• Upper level undergraduate or graduate student; truly interested in the non-profit fundraising, health care sectors and/or special events.
• Strong Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and database skills; Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) skills, and knowledge of Blackbaud programs (i.e. Raiser’s Edge or TeamRaiser) a plus.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• A self-starter, able to complete projects with limited guidance.
Application dates: BCAN’s special events internship runs from January, 2016 - May, 2016. (Exact dates TBD in consultation with the intern.)
Application procedure: Submit a cover letter, resume and one writing sample (350-500 words) to Jeanne Mahoney, BCAN’s Community Resource Coordinator.

About the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network: Founded in 2005, BCAN is a community of advocates, survivors, patients, caregivers, family members and medical professionals joining in support of bladder cancer patients. Our work is critical - bladder cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the United States, but it is not a disease that is well known or understood by the general public. This lack of awareness leads to delayed outcomes that cost lives. BCAN’s mission is to raise awareness about bladder cancer, provide education and support to bladder cancer patients and their families and advance bladder cancer research.
