Tenacity AmeriCorps Fellows (2015-16)--WE NEED YOU NOW--2 spots open!!!

Tenacity’s one-year AmeriCorps service opportunity awaits! Join us for a rich experience in youth development, whole child education philosophy, urban issues, education reform and your personal/professional development. This deep and meaningful experience starts with robust training in August leading to service in Tenacity’s Middle School Academy, and culminates with leadership opportunities in Tenacity’s Summer Tennis and Reading Program. Throughout the experience you will receive on-going training, thorough and supportive supervision, and the opportunity to make a great difference in the lives of underserved youth.

About Tenacity:

Tenacity is a Boston-based youth development organization focused on closing the achievement and opportunity gaps for less advantaged urban youth. From elementary school through college and beyond, Tenacity offers a unique Pathway combining literacy and life skills instruction, mentoring, family engagement, and tennis/fitness coaching that mitigates barriers to success, unlocks potential, and empowers participants. The youth served by Tenacity's Pathway programs develop positive identities as students, mentors, and leaders while mastering important academic, college readiness, workforce readiness, and life skills. The effectiveness of Tenacity’s whole-child approach is evidenced by the achievements of Tenacity Pathway students: a 95% high school graduation rate and a 70% rate of current enrollment in, or graduation from, college or approved post-secondary programs.

Responsibilities:

Each Member will serve on a team of approximately 4-5 other Members at one of our Middle School Academy sites, leading small groups of students in various academic and fitness activities in an afterschool or classroom setting during the year. Members will also help create lesson plans for literacy blocks as well as tennis and fitness blocks, recruit and manage volunteers, assist in data entry, and facilitate family engagement initiatives. Members will transition to a leadership role during the summer as Tennis and Reading Coordinators, running one of the sites in Tenacity’s Summer Tennis & Reading program. Additional responsibilities will include facilitating field trips, planning family engagement events and workshops, chaperoning students on bus rides, and supporting school-specific projects.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with family visits where possible, assisting in the creation of parent workshop plans, attending workshops, supporting the drafting and execution of student behavior plans and delivering the habits curriculum when appropriate.
  • Connecting volunteers with training, developing channels of on-going communication, ensuring a welcoming and supported entry into the site over time, being vigil to challenges and eager to appreciate.
  • Tutoring and mentoring students individually outside of program either in a 1 on 1 Academic Tutoring (IE Specialty block tutoring) setting where possible, or an outside-of-program mentoring (Lunch hang outs, Field Trips, etc.) setting.
  • Supporting at least one partner school teacher (at least once a week, preferably twice) in a content class (preferably Math or ELA) throughout the year, assisting the instructor throughout the lesson and where possible, plan and learn best practices from that instructor.
  • Taking leadership roles in coordinating the high school selection process with their site team and students, attending all relevant HSS workshops and information sessions and organizing student visits to high schools (including parental and school permission), etc.
