Centro Hispano Marista Volunteer Position Title: Language Arts Substitute Teacher
Time Commitment: Maximum of 2 hours per week of instruction (7-9 pm on Tuesday evenings), depending on when substitutes are needed.
Duration of Commitment: mid-February 2016 to mid-May 2016
Context: The Centro Hispano Marista serves over 700 adult Latino students who seek to pass the GED exam in order to obtain their high school equivalency diploma. We offer Social Studies, Language Arts, Science, and Math classes in both English and Spanish to these students.
Responsibilities: The Language Arts Substitute Teacher’s primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Attending and participating in pre-service training and orientation prior to teaching
- Following lesson plans prepared by primary teacher to implement for class
- Substituting for Language Arts classes as assigned and tracking attendance for classes taught
- Encouraging assigned students as they progress towards passing the GED, and sharing concerns about specific students with the Program Director
Qualifications: Ideal candidates for this volunteer position should:
- Be bilingual in English and in Spanish
- Be comfortable teaching a Language Arts class in one or both languages
- Possess a positive and determined attitude, as well as the ability to work with diverse populations
- Be reliable, flexible and able to adapt to high-paced and changing circumstances

Centro Hispano Marista is a nonprofit program that offers adults affordable educational preparation to obtain their GED diploma, so they can pursue higher education, aspire to better jobs, and secure a promising future for themselves and their families regardless of their background.
Description
Centro Hispano Marista provides GED preparation classes for adults. GED, or General Educational Development test, certifies the equivalency of high school education. When a student works on their high school equivalency, their children and those around them are more likely to earn their diploma on time, making Centro’s impact multi-generational.
Centro Hispano Marista is a ministry of the Society of Mary. Since 1901, the Society of Mary has shared its educational mission with thousands of students and their families in the Atlanta area. Marists are inspired "to think, judge, feel and act as (Mary) in all things." The Marist Way core values include discipleship, simplicity, humility, hidden and unknown, simplicity, hospitality and inclusiveness.
Centro Hispano Marista intends to reach out to and uplift those marginalized by poverty in great need of an education following the Marist Way. It is a key part of the program to offer a welcoming environment for students regardless of their background or immigration status to complete their educational goals in an affordable way and with compassion.
