Interested in building your teaching skills while helping adults taking college classes or working toward promotion at work? Tutors are needed to assist ABE (Adult Basic Education) and high-level ESL (English as a Second Language) learners one-on-one, helping them improve their formal reading and writing skills. You would also provide support and mentorship throughout the semester as your assigned student works toward a GED, Pre-GED, or workplace literacy goal.
This commitment is for 3 hrs/week for an entire semester. Tutoring times/locations are flexible; we would match you with an adult whose schedule matches yours and you two can decide the day/time/location of your weekly sessions for the semester. Your responsibilities:
- Prepare weekly lessons from pre-designated materials/curriculum
- Make weekly reminder calls to your student
- Provide mentorship and support to your student, including help accessing resources (we'll train you)!
- Report hours and student progress to Literacy Network
We require our tutors to be reliable, kind, and patient. You should have basic computer proficiency (Word, internet) and we give preference to volunteers with teaching/tutoring experience. Tutors accepted into this program are required to attend one of the following hour-long trainings:
- Saturday, October 17th 10:00-11:00am
- Tuesday, October 20th 6:30-7:30pm
