About Shanti's Margot Murphy Breast Cancer Program

Shanti exists to enhance the quality of life, health, and well being of people living with life-threatening illnesses. Founded in 1974, Shanti was one of the first volunteer organizations to work with terminally ill clients and, and by the early 1980s had distinguished itself by becoming the first community-based organization to respond to San Francisco’s growing AIDS epidemic. Building on the success of our HIV/AIDS program and responding to changing community needs, in 2001 we established our Breast Cancer Program to mitigate factors that lead to the disproportionate rates of breast cancer mortality among vulnerable San Francisco populations. The Breast Cancer Program now also serves women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers and will soon expand to serve women diagnosed with any type of cancer.

Our program offers services to mitigate the barriers women face after a cancer diagnosis. Our care navigators provide multilingual, culturally competent services, offering patient advocacy, language interpretation, help applying for social services, in-home support, appointment accompaniment, and transportation assistance. Our staff meets with clients in their homes, hospital rooms, or in our office. We work with anyone newly diagnosed, in survivorship, or in palliative care. Shanti also provides health and wellness groups and classes. Shanti is part of a larger breast cancer community, partnering with public and private hospitals in San Francisco, and working closely with social workers, medical providers, and community partners to encourage treatment adherence to reduce interruptions in care.

Communications and Outreach Intern

Shanti is currently seeking a resourceful, organized intern with an interest in improving women’s health, developing knowledge of community resources, and improving service delivery to vulnerable populations. An ideal intern will have experience in community outreach, communications, and website development. • Assist the team with various tasks to support the day-to-day function of the program

Professional benefits:

  • Grow project management skills and work in a small team setting

  • Polish teaching and training skills in a comfortable environment
  • Connect with the large network of community resource programs in San Francisco and the Bay Area
  • Participate in the Shanti Peer Support Volunteer Training at the end of October

All Shanti staff are trained in the Peer Support Model, which practices compassionate and nonjudgmental listening from the heart. The intern would be encouraged to attend and complete the Peer Support Volunteer Training.

The next Peer Support Volunteer Training dates are as follows:

· Friday, October 23 from 6-9:30pm

· Saturday, October 24 from 9am-6pm

· Sunday, October 25 from 9am-6pm

While we are unable to offer financial compensation for this internship, we are confident that you will gain a unique, valuable experience that will challenge you, enhance your leadership skills, and give you an inside perspective into the work of community-based organizations serving some of the area’s most vulnerable populations. We are happy to work with any college or university to assure that you get credit for completing an internship with us.

To apply, please send your resume and a short description of your interest in the position to abakamjian@shanti.org.

About Shanti - San Francisco

Location:

730 Polk Street, San Francisco, CA 94109, US

Mission Statement

Shanti enhances the quality of life, health and well-being of people living with life-threatening illnesses, including Breast Cancer and HIV/AIDS.

Description

Founded in 1974 by Dr. Charles Garfield, Shanti has been at the forefront of a growing national movement to enhance the quality of life for persons living with life-threatening or chronic illnesses by providing volunteer-based emotional and practical support.

Shanti is a Sanskrit word meaning "inner peace" or "tranquility". It is an appropriate name since, ultimately, all of Shanti's direct service and educational programs are aimed at easing the burdens and improving the well-being of people in difficult life situations.

Key to the success of Shanti's mission is the Shanti Model of Peer Support, which is both a philosophy and a set of techniques that are used throughout our work. It is a way of being with another person that frees both parties to be fully who they are and communicate their feelings to one another. It is a way of being which allows two persons to meet as equals. It is a way of relating to others that is characterized by certain values and attitudes.

Definition of Peer
We define peer as someone who is not necessarily like us in obvious ways, but is someone with whom we share a basic humanity; someone with whom we are equals. All people share universal human experiences. By virtue of this shared humanity, we are all peers. The Shanti Model of Peer Support is based on this equality.

Values Underlying the Shanti Model of Peer Support

  • mutual respect
  • positive regard
  • empowerment of the client (the assumption that the client has the solutions to his or her own problems and does not need your advice of direction)
  • genuineness (being oneself, authenticity)
  • acceptance of differences (does not mean agreement, but acceptance based on respect)
  • empathy (allowing oneself to feel with another person)
  • intention to be of service
