The Atlanta Victim Assistance Program are is looking for volunteer victim support advocates for the Victim Compensation Unit. Advocates provide immediate crisis intervention and support for victims of crime and surviving families in cases of death, domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes. Emotional support is provided, as well as information regarding available long-term support services.

Victim Advocates will be trained to offer emotional support and crisis counseling to crime victims in the City of Atlanta. Services provided are: information on the criminal justice system, support agency referral, aid in acquiring emergency shelter and facilitation of other immediate needs. The victim advocate will conduct follow-up assistance in providing information on victim compensation benefits and status and progression of the case.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:


Provide advocacy and immediate crisis intervention for victims of crime.
Assess immediate need of victim and provide referrals and follow-up services.
Act as a liaison between victims and the criminal justice system.
Ensure that victims are aware of their rights under the Georgia Law and offer information about the Crime Victim's Compensation Act.
Complete necessary reports - documenting services rendered and activities performed.
Represent this agency in a positive and professional manner when contacting victims and citizens.
Attend monthly support and training meetings.

REQUIRED:

This position requires a caring, articulate, sensitive individual with the ability to maintain good rapport with victims, patrol officers, outside agencies and the public. Must be 21 years of age, be able to at least ten hours per week and have an open, non-judgmental attitude toward victims/survivors. Must possess the ability to communicate well, think well, and respond quickly. Must complete initial 40 hour training, make a one year commitment to the program and go on a 4 hour ride-a-long with officer per year. A valid driver's license and ability to successfully complete a full background check is required.

Advocates will be provided in depth and on-going training on the dynamics of victimization, victim services and gain direct experience in providing support to people in need. They will also gain knowledge about law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Participation will enhance community responsiveness to the right of victims and survivors of crime.

AVA absorbs the trauma of our city by providing comprehensive services that help victims of violent crimes, specifically victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, survivors of sexual assault and secondary survivors of human-trafficking living within the City of Atlanta overcome crisis and become survivors as they restore their lives.
