Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services

You can make a difference in the life of a child. Become a BIG Brother or BIG Sister with JBFCS. "Bigs" are role models who provide consistency, trust, and support to "littles", children aged 7-16. Volunteers must be 21 years old, available to spend 2-3 hours every other weekend with a child and make a one year commitment. Spending time with a child can include playing ball, visiting a museum, or just getting pizza and talking. Matches are carefully made to meet the needs and interests of our volunteers and children.

Programs:

Big Brother Big Sister Treatment Program: For children who are clients of JBFCS. This program serves as an important adjunct to the child's therapeutic treatment at one of the JBFCS clinics.

Big Brother Big Sister Onsite Program: For children who live at a JBFCS residential program. "Bigs" visit their "littles" onsite at the JBFCS program location.

Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Program: This program matches Jewish "Bigs" with Jewish "Littles"

Location:

463 7th Avenue, 18th floor, New York, NY 10018, US

Mission Statement

JBFCS serves over 55,000 New Yorkers annually from all religious, ethnic, and economic backgrounds through a comprehensive range of 175 community-based programs, residential facilities, and day-treatment centers. Our work is built upon the professionalism and compassion of 2,200 employees, including professional social workers, licensed psychologists, and psychiatrists, as well as a cadre of clinical support personnel in continuing day treatment and residential treatment centers. A corps of 800 dedicated volunteers work with our staff to help ease the burdens that strain and disrupt the lives of our clients.

Description

What began over a century ago as a network of volunteers bringing food and clothing to poor Jewish families is now one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive mental health and social service agencies. Leaders in the field of human services, we proudly serve people of all faiths, races and cultures promoting well-being, resilience and self-sufficiency for individuals and families at every stage of life. Service defines us best. Every night of the year, more than 1,000 men, women and children sleep in residences under our care. Every week of the year, more than 2,500 people receive counseling from professionals on our staff . JBFCS, a beneficiary of the UJA-Federation of New York, is a place of clinical excellence and compassionate care: For the mother and her children seeking refuge from domestic violence. For the family coping with caring for a developmentally disabled child. For the parent facing depression and despair following job loss. For the couple struggling to maintain a loving relationship. For the toddler showing early signs of developmental delays. For the child bearing the trauma of abuse and neglect. For the teen grappling with the challenges of mental illness and becoming a productive young adult. For the older adult fighting depression and anxiety related to age and loss. Whatever the stage of life, whatever the overwhelming stress may be, JBFCS represents this city's most experienced first line of response.
