The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is a children's museum, science and technology center and zoo in Dayton, Ohio, that focuses on science and natural history. Exhibits include an extensive natural history collection as well as maintaining a collection of live animals native to Ohio and abroad. Educational outreach extends to the community by providing in-school programming and on-site special programs. SunWatch Indian Village and Fort Ancient are the sister sites to the museum.

The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), affiliated with the Association of Children's Museums (ACM), and is a governing member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC). In addition, the museum's indoor Discovery Zoo is fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The museum is the only zoo, aquarium, planetarium or science center in Dayton, and also houses the Apollo Observatory, an astronomical observatory operated by the Miami Valley Astronomical Society.

Our Volunteers will help provide a safe, fun and interactive environment for guests. This is a great opportunity for those that want to insure this type of institution is around for a very long time. We are looking for creative, fun and outgoing people who are willing to let their guard down for a few hours and help people enjoy a really unique Museum. What you will be doing largely depends on you. We have Volunteers who exclusively work in our zoo and some that just want to do programs for guests. It really does depend on your comfort level. This is ideal for resume builders or people just wanting to give back to the community. This does include working with teens and Mentoring.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Dayton Society of Natural History is to educate and enlighten all people of the region about the wonders of the world through the work of the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park, and Fort Ancient Earthworks and Nature Preserve.

Description

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is based on the understanding that science is the process through which we come to understand our world, and that play is the way children do science. Thus, we are a place where play and learning come together so that visitors of all ages can explore the wonders of the world. The Museum includes a host of places for adventure: the Hall of the Universe, the Caryl D. Philips Space Theater, Oscar Boonshoft Science Central, the Mead TreeHouse, Bieser Discovery Center, The Discovery Zoo, and two galleries for temporary exhibits. Adventures are enhanced through real specimens and artifacts from the museum's collection of 1.8 million items.

Our sister site, SunWatch Indian Village, brings to life the 900 year old Fort Ancient culture. Here visitors of all ages can experience the daily lives of these members of Dayton's first neighborhood.

SunWatch currently combines experimental archaeological research, including the reconstruction of the Fort Ancient structures in their original 13th century locations, with an interpretive center that exhibits many of the artifacts that have been recovered from the site. The village reconstruction includes five lath and daub structures with grass thatch roofs, portions of a stockade, and a native garden and prairie with plants typical of the period. Inferred astronomical alignments originate from a complex of posts at the center of the village that have also been replaced.
