Being a volunteer* Peer Mentor doesn't mean you are perfect. It means you care.

We're looking for people 18+ to be trained as a recovery Peer Mentor. A Peer Mentor is someone who has experienced mental health issues and is in recovery. The purpose is to give others in the process hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

As a Peer Mentor, the volunteer will meet with the Peer, as agreed between the Mentor and Peer. Basic meeting time is once a week for an hour, or as needed. Meetings can take place at Peace Zone or in a public location, such as a coffee shop. The Peer Mentor will become the Peer's support in recovery.

This is not to take the place of formal counseling, but to support the process. A Peer Mentor is a valued tool in the mental health recovery process because many people find themselves isolated. They indicate they'd like to turn to a friend or family member, but many times, those are the very people who lack the skills to offer support.

As stated above, time involvement will be at least an hour, plus travel time, but it can include more time, if the Mentor and Peer agree. Specialized training will involve a week, in order to become certified in Indiana. Requirements for certification: Indiana resident, minimum high school diploma and 18 years or older. ( http://chwcrs.org/) Tentatively, the class will be held the end of February, beginning of March here in Evansville, Indiana.

We ask for a one-to-two year commitment from the volunteer. That is because it takes time to establish trust between the Mentor and Peer. As this is a brand new program for Peace Zone, things can change to better adapt to both Mentor and the Peer.

* If you are interested in volunteering in a different area, volunteers are not limited to Peer Mentoring. Please let us know your area of interest.

Peace Zone is a recovery support center for adults 18+, and opened February 28, 2013.

Mission Statement

PEACE Zone’s mission is to promote mental health wellness and recovery and to educate the community about mental health issues.

Description

PEACE Zone is a peer-run recovery center, run for and by its members, that helps individuals struggling with mental health and co-occurring mental health and substance abuse issues. Our members find comfort in knowing that their journey is not being traveled alone. We strongly believe that while each individual’s recovery process is unique, recovery is possible for everyone. We offer holistic, recovery-oriented programming that is open to anyone in the community with mental health issues, regardless of where he/she may receive professional mental health treatment. Our program is not a form of treatment and is non-clinical. Call 812-436-4320 for more information.
