The mission of Community Action is to reduce poverty and its impacts on people in Ramsey and Washington counties. For more than 30 yearsCommunity Action has been at the forefront of energy conservation, and has weatherized over 13,000 homes in Ramsey and Washington counties. Using the latest technologies, Community Action performs energy audits,repairs and or replaces mechanical systems, and perform home weatherization services such as: attic and wall insulation, air sealing, mechanical ventilation, and various health and safety activities.

Title : Energy Auditor Intern

Purpose: For low income families energy bills are increasingly consuming a larger portion of their household income. To help families reduce their energy consumption and bills, Community Action’ s Energy Conservation Program works to weatherize their homes, and provides energy education regarding the use of energy in their home.The Energy Auditor Assistant Intern will be mentored by the Energy Auditor to learn all elements of the audit process.The intern will have the benefit of on-going supervision and evaluation, gain knowledge of working in both a non-profit setting and in energy conservation, experience hands on learning in areas of setting up and working with standard equipment utilized in the position and enhance their training skills through providing energy education to the client.

Tasks and Responsibilities :

Assist the Energy Auditor with:

  • Transporting equipment in and out of homes.

  • Completing measurements of home using measuring tape

  • Taking photographs and downloading files for inclusion in the audit report.

  • Setting up equipment to perform necessary diagnostic testing: Blower Door, Combustion Analyser, Infrared Camera Scan.

  • Assist with client energy education.


Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in a college or technical training program in a related field.

  • Possess an interest in building science and or energy conservation.

  • Reliable transportation to intern to and from client sites throughout the Twin Cities metro area



ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must be self motivated.

  • Experience with photo file downloading and organizing a plus.

  • Good oral and written communication skills. Spanish, Hmong, Somali, or Karen language skills a plus.

  • Must be able to relate to and communicate effectively with varied socio-economic multiethnic individuals and/or groups.

  • Computer proficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Access, Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical exertion required: climbing heights; must be able to lift 75 pounds.

  • Must be able to crawl, climb, and otherwise move about in confined spaces, often in dusty and dirty work sites.


ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work in substandard housing conditions including temperature variations, strong odors, cockroaches, bedbugs, and other pests, and unsanitary housing conditions.

  • Potential exposure to airborne fibers such as fiberglass, cellulose, and asbestos.

  • Potential exposure to: dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide, mold/mildew and other environmental hazards.

  • Able to work outdoors in bad weather including extreme temperature conditions

  • Some normal office environment



Time Commitment and Compensation : This position is 20 hours per week for 13 weeks. Hours will be during the standard work day M-F 8:00 4:30 PM. Intern will receive a $1,000 stipend upon completing the internship. Start date is negotiable.
