ORGANIZATION: TOWNSHIP OF UNION COMMUNITY GARDEN

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 2 people are interested

Last month we started work on our native butterfly garden, did a lot of weeding and made some new raised beds, but we still have more to do before the season ends!

More raised beds will be built this month, plus the weeding and chip laying that we always need done. We also have tree seedlings to pot and (if we get enough volunteers) we might even work on a raised flower bed.

Please supervise small children for their safety, but we love seeing the next generation get involved in community service, so volunteers of any age are welcome!

And even if you don't have time to work, feel free to stop by and say hi. We always like to meet new people and show off our garden :)

Bring a snack to share and whatever you'd like for working in a garden (we suggest sunblock and work gloves). We'll provide the drinks!

Parking is limited so if it fills up, please park on a side street and walk in. We're at the Eleanor R. Erickson park on Liberty. The entrance is across the street from Bancroft Avenue.

Please be aware there is no bathroom at the garden, but we're in easy driving distance of stores.

About TOWNSHIP OF UNION COMMUNITY GARDEN

Location:

Eleanor R. Erickson Park, Intersection of Liberty and Bancroft, UNION, NJ 07083, US

Mission Statement

The Township of Union Community Garden is a nonprofit membership organization of professionals, volunteers and supporters of community greening in urban communities. The ToUCG recognizes that community gardening improves people’s quality of life by providing a catalyst for neighborhood and community development, stimulating social interaction, encouraging self-reliance, beautifying neighborhoods, producing nutritious food, reducing family food budgets, conserving resources and creating opportunities for recreation, exercise, therapy and education.

Description

The Township of Union Community Garden is open to all residents of Union. For $25 a year, residents can lease a bed and grow whatever vegetables or flowers they wish. The gardeners are responsible for the upkeep of their own beds but we also ask that they put in 4 hours a year helping out the garden as a whole. We have scheduled work parties where gardeners and other volunteers show up to socialize and get things done. The work parties are where the "community" part of community garden really shines. While the beds are only for lease for Union residents we welcome volunteers from anywhere to come help out.
