Paint the Town Pink 2015

The 2015 Komen North Central Alabama Race for the Cure is right around the corner and it's time for us to get the word out by painting the town pink! We are looking for volunteers to help us distribute Race brochures, posters, and yard signs throughout the Greater Birmingham area and beyond as we get ready for our October 17th Race for the Cure.

Volunteers are asked to come by the Komen Community Office (1909 27th Avenue South Homewood, AL 35209) and pick up materials that they will deliver to various business and community locations. Hours are flexible and this activity can be done on weekends even though materials must be picked up during our business hours, Monday through Friday. Volunteers are free to deliver brochures and posters to locations that they see suitable, and place yard signs in high traffic areas in their communities. A list of locations and areas is also available for volunteers who would like a little more direction.

This opportunity is great for school and civic groups looking for community service hours!

Please contact Deanna Fowler, Outreach and Grants Manager, with any questions.

Mission Statement

To save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

Description

Susan G. Komen North Central Alabama, a local 501(c)(3) charity, works every day of every year to save lives in Alabama by serving women, men and families affected by breast cancer, by educating the community about the importance of screening and early detection and by providing access to life-saving services and treatment through financial funding and support. With more than 20 years of continuous local service, Komen North Central Alabama is the only organization in our area solely devoted to ending breast cancer through a multipronged approach of education, screening, treatment, patient support, research and advocacy.

Through the direction of our local board of directors, Komen North Central Alabama operates on a very lean budget with 4 staff members and over 1,200 volunteers. Seventy-five percent of funds raised locally are used to provide breast health and cancer screening, diagnostics, treatment and education services for women and men, and twenty-five percent of net proceeds support breast cancer research. Funding decisions are made locally - to meet the local need. To date, Komen North Central Alabama has provided more than $5 million for local community services and programs and over $2 million into cutting-edge breast cancer research. This funding has provided more than 19,500 free mammograms for underserved women in Alabama since 2003.
