Sunday Streets

Thank you for signing up for Sunday Streets Berkeley!

Sunday Streets Berkeley is in it's fourth year of encouraging people to play, to move, and to exercise on safe, auto-free streets. It is a free event where participants are invited to come out and play, and to get to know local businesses, community resources and organizations throughout the route. The 2015 route will close Shattuck Avenue from Rose St. to Haste to car traffic.

Volunteers are needed to help support the event at intersections and along the route as Traffic Guides: providing information and guidance to event participants, alternative route information to drivers, monitoring traffic barriers, setting up and breaking down the event, and keeping their assigned area clean.

We will need a few people to help out at the command center, assisting volunteers with check in, check out, and information during the event.

Some people will be assigned to help out with surveying event participants: making sure we are gathering data and information about how to make the event more awesome the next time around.

We are also in need of "Route Rabbits": folks who have experience working with large crowds and some traffic control, who have a bicycle, and would like more of a leadership role during the event. Route Rabbits are integral to making our event run smoothly, and interact with activities hosts and the event management team. They are an important part of the team responsible for assisting in helping to get the route closed off and reopened as smoothly as possible. Route rabbits also help to move volunteers where they are needed, stand in for volunteers so that they can take a break, and are the eyes and ears for the management team along the route, alerting us to medical issues, difficult drivers, and unauthorized vendors along the route.

Mission Statement

Walk Oakland Bike Oakland's (WOBO) mission is to improve neighborhood quality of life in Oakland by making walking and bicycling safe, accessible, easy and fun.

Description

The goal of WALK OAKLAND - BIKE OAKLAND (WOBO) is to galvanize interest in improving Oakland's pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure by educating residents, workers, business owners, and commuters.

WOBO was founded in 2007 on the heels of a neighborhood that successfully engaged neighbors, businesses, schools and senior centers around a proposed new Whole Foods store. Together, the coalition won design changes that included new crosswalks and pedestrian amenities, and bike parking and bike access on and around the Whole Foods site.

The initial focus around a specific development project soon expanded to the mission of improving neighborhood quality of life by engaging residents and businesses to champion smart policies that make walking and biking in Oakland safe, easy, accessible and fun. We envision an Oakland in which people of all abilities, ages, and socio-economic situations have the choice to walk and bicycle to jobs, school, shopping, and for recreation, and thus, to enjoy the privilege of health.
