Be the face of the Historical Society by being at the reception desk. Greet visitors and introduce them to the exhibits, direct them to the research library and collect related fees, answer the phone, answer questions posed by tourists, and handle sales in RCHS book shop. In free time, you may also do some museum cataloging or clerical work for the society. Hours areThursday, Friday, or Saturday from noon to 5 pm. You could sign up to work for part of a day, or as a substitute reception person.
We are seeking volunteers willing to make a long-term commitment to the organization. Potential volunteers are required to 1) submit a brief resume so we can assess their strengths/experience to best employ them in working in the museum/library, and 2) attend a basic orientation to the museum/library and its collection. Sessions are held every few months, so there could be a slightdelay in beginning work.

Mission Statement
The Rensselaer County Historical Society strives to enrich the present and advocate for the future by bringing the region's past to life, recognizing every face and every story. In pursuit of this mission, we collect, preserve, study, interpret, and make accessible a broad variety of objects and documents, and conduct educational programs to inspire public enthusiasm for the past.
Description
The Rensselaer County Historical Society and Museum is a dynamic not-for-profit educational organization established in 1927 to connect local history and heritage with contemporary life. Situated in the downtown Second Street Historic District in Troy, New York, the museum fulfills its mission from two adjacent 19th century townhouses -- the historic and architecturally significant Hart-Cluett House, which serves as a house museum, and the Carr Building, which houses exhibits, programs, and a research library.
