ORGANIZATION: Houston Food Bank

Did you know that 14% of the U.S. population is food-insecure or at risk of running out of money for food? Food-insecure individuals are at high-risk for diabetes, and food-insecure individuals with diabetes are at a high risk for hyper- and hypoglycemia. For a diabetic individual, a healthy diet and diabetes self-management education are key to avoiding and preventing disease complications and appropriately managing blood sugar levels.

The Houston Food Bank and the University of California, San Francisco, will be collaborating on a diabetes intervention study in the food pantry setting, exploring the effects of intervention on glycemic control, diabetes distress, fruit/vegetable intake, and healthcare utilization.

We need Volunteer Research Assistants to help with this study at local food pantries. Duties will include the following:

  1. Testing and monitoring of blood glucose levels
  2. Assisting with survey administration
  3. Distributing and recording Diabetes-appropriate food packages
  4. Providing Diabetes self-management education and support

We are currently in need of volunteers to help at our Emergency Pantry location at 535 Portwall St. Houston, TX 77029. We need help on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00PM - 7:00PM. Please feel free to choose the day and hours that fit your schedule the best.
