Chattanooga and the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District hold historical significance as locations of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. In fact, Ross's Landing, a park in Chattanooga, was a camp from which several detachments of Cherokees started the trail.

For this event, walkers will gather at the Moccasin Bend Gateway site at 10 Hamm Road where an NPS interpretive ranger stationed will give a brief overview of Trail of Tears History and specifically the route that will be walked that day because there were 13 different detachments of Cherokees that all took different routes.

Then commemorators will walk the actual Drane route of the Trail of Tears where this detachment left Ross's Landing 177 years earlier. The detachment would have left Ross's landing and moved along the Brown's Ferry Federal Road on the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District to the banks of the Tennessee River. There, they would have crossed the Tennessee River and continued on their journey, but during this event, the walkers will stop at the Tennessee River and listen to another NPS interpretive ranger-led history about the Trail of Tears.

Please meet at the Moccasin Bend Gateway at 2:00 pm to join the Friends of Moccasin Bend and the National Park Service in this Trail of Tears Commemorative Walk.
