ORGANIZATION: JVS, Jewish Vocational Service

Responsibilities:

Assist in a vocational English class for immigrants who work at Legal Sea Foods. All the students are employees at Legal Sea Foods and are learning English at work. The classes focus on improving English communication and written skills to help them at work. The Beginner class focuses on basic English skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, and the Intermediate class will focus on a slightly higher level of workplace communication skills as well as academic topics. A volunteer would assist students in completing in-class tasks and group activities. There is also an opportunity to work with low-literacy or very beginner students if skills match.

Skills/Qualifications:

Related experience is welcome, but training will be provided.

  • Interest in working with people of various linguistic, cultural, religious, ethnic and national backgrounds.
  • Commitment to learning techniques for providing effective services to help immigrants learn English.
  • English proficiency is required; must be able to take written instruction and read online applications.
  • Ability to speak other languages not required but welcome.
  • Ability to work in dynamic and often changing work environment.
  • Ability to work as part of a team with staff and other volunteers/interns.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility-responsibilities will vary on a day-to-day basis.
  • Empathy for the challenges of learning a new culture and a new language.

Time Commitment:

Wednesdays and/or Thursdays 9:30-11:30

Directions:

Accessible by the Silver Line (SL2, Harbor St. stop and 5-7 minute walk down Seafood Way). Parking is also available.
