Adult Services Department
Position:Volunteer Career Advisor
Major Objective:
To meet with job seekers and assist in reviewing resumes, evaluating interviewing skills and help with the development of effective job search skills
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Volunteer Career Assistant will have scheduled half hour appointments with area job seekers to review resumes and general job search strategy.
- The assistant should check to see if appointments have been arranged on the scheduled date. Librarians will schedule the appointments on an as-needed basis.
- The assistant has the option to help out with job search programs, networking groups and career fairs.
- There is a possibility of assisting job seekers at a drop in time adding a "drop in" time.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- The applicant should enjoy meeting and talking to people
- The applicant should have a strong knowledge of the job search process, ideally from a human resources perspective.
- The applicant should be up to date on employment trends and community resources for job seekers.
Supervisor:
- The Adult Services Career Librarian is responsible for administrative supervision of the volunteer.
Orientation and Training:
- Library-wide - general library orientation for volunteers
- Adult Services Department - includes a department tour and introduction to Adult staff members, a review of Adult procedures and expectations as they relate to volunteers, and an explanation of the volunteer’s specific duties and responsibilities
- Orientation of the career resources in the library
- Overview of the current method for finding job resources
Work Schedule:
The Volunteer Career Assistant should be available to stop in the library at a scheduled time every other week for 2 hours of scheduled appointments. More time can be scheduled if desired but is not necessary.
Commitment Required:
The position would require a 6 hour commitment per month.
