workshops

Free, two-week accelerated quilting class to be held Mondays October 19th and October 26th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Lowell Association for the blind, for the blind and visually impaired.

The Mitsy Kit provides adapted materials and training to enable the blind and/or visually impaired to enjoy hand sewing, quilting, and fabric crafting using their sense of touch.

Born from a daughter and mother story, the kit came to life to enable Mitsy, a former seamstress, to enjoy sewing again.

Tactile and packaging cues provide guidance for correct ordering and directionality of pieces to achieve desired patterns.

The goal of the Mitsy Kit is to provide the opportunity for people of all visual abilities to enjoy creating beautiful, hand sewn and quilted products with both visual and tactile appeal.

· Volunteers are essential to enable our mission, ensure sustainability, and to help build upon community awareness and engagement.

· Sighted Guides are needed to support our community-based workshops. This is a great opportunity to get hands-on community service experience working with the blind, visually impaired and senior community in the greater Boston and surrounding areas.

· The basic role involves assisting the workshop participants as they learn how to use the sewing tools and quilting kits. Free training will be provided requiring about 2 hours of time prior to scheduled workshops.

· Prior experience with basic sewing skills is helpful (threading a needle and basic hand stitching) but there is no need for prior quilting experience.

  • Please contact Tammy Roussell at Tammy.Roussell@MitsyKit.org if you are interested in learning more or to sign up to volunteer for one or more of our workshops.

About Mitsy Kit Inc.

Mission Statement

We help to connect lives and create memories with accessible, quality craft activities.

Description

Mitsy kit was initially developed to help the blind and visually impaired to find joy and purpose through the activity of sewing and quilting by touch, using our patented tactile sewing system and method of use. We soon realized that many others, in addition to the blind, benefited from our kits to re-engage in meaningful activities. This prompted provision of our kits and services to support a broader community including those with memory impairment, autism, aphasia, traumatic brain injury, and other seniors and children with or without physical or cognitive disability.

Organizations served include Centers for the blind and low vision, Senior Centers and Council On Aging, Nursing Homes and Assisted Living, and Dementia residential care facilities, as well as activity programs for the disabled.

Although our current products are sewing and quilting focused, we are committed in the long term to designing new kits to meet the needs of the diverse population we serve.
