As a research assistant in our lab, you would learn about projects about children's comprehension of words like "no", "only" and "some;" how children learn verbs; how proper nouns come to refer to things in the world; and bilingualism.
Research Assistants (RAs) are paired with a PhD student mentor and work about 10 hours per week through the summer of 2016 (hopefully continuing into the fall semester). Some typical RA duties include doing background readings to gain a theoretical foothold in their projects, recruiting and scheduling child and adult participants, testing participants in the lab and in daycares, coding video data and audio data, and creating stimuli for new studies using Photoshop and other tools.
Research Assistants are required to attend 1 lab meeting per week. Snedeker Lab meetings on are on Wednesdays from 2:30-4pm in William James Hall 1050.
The lab experience would be a great introduction to all the stages of the research process as well as some of the current questions people are asking and methods people are using in the field of language development. We encourage all responsible, curious, friendly, and detail-oriented people with an interest in language research to apply!
If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Liz (echalmers@fas.harvard.edu) and Chantal (choff@fas.harvard.edu) to request an application at your earliest convenience. Priority will be given to native English speakers as RAs must in most cases be able to administer studies where features of the RA's language may influence experimental results.
