The Up2Us Sports Coach positions are sponsored by the Corporation of National & Community Service, Laureus Sport for Good, and Nike. This position is not a salary and/or job position. It is a service opportunity which includes a living stipend and an end of service term award.

ABOUT UP2US SPORTS

Up2Us is a coalition of more than 700 nonprofit organizations that believe in the power of sports to fight childhood obesity, end academic failure, and reduce gang participation. Up2Us provides its coalition members with resources, services, and technical assistance that help them better deliver and expand quality sports-based youth development programming in some of the nation's most underserved communities. Up2Us' flagship program is Coach Across America (CAA), a national coach/mentor program that places, trains, and supports coaches to provide meaningful experiences to youth in a variety of sports programs nationwide. ABOUT APEX COMMUNITY ADVANCEMENT, INC.

APEX Community Advancement, Inc. was formed for the expressed purpose of supporting, innovating and creating programs and services focusing on the needs of young people from age 5 through 25 in our communities. Our first goal and major project was to create a flagship youth/teen center. The APEX Youth Center opened on January 18, 2010. The center is currently located in Central City New Orleans, one of the highest need areas in the city.

After school hours has been shown to be the peak time for violence and crime among juveniles, so APEX reaches out to the Central City neighborhood as a safe, supervised space for youth during those hours. The day-to-day operations are focused on activities and programs that prepare Central City youth to become productive citizens of New Orleans through social skills building, empowerment, education, arts, technology and sports. These activities include homework help and tutoring, mentoring, behavioral relationship pods (BRPs) and sports.

ABOUT THE SERVICE POSITION

Basketball coach

APEX currently provides daily pick-up games and bi-weekly weekend tournaments. The basketball coach will help continue these activities as well as facilitate and organize a team that plays against other community teams.

The Basketball coach will be expected to:

Act as a positive mentor and behavior model for youth.

Organize and facilitate APEX Elites basketball team

- Schedule games

- Schedule and facilitate team practices

- Build team culture and accountability among team

- Work with APEX staff to coordinate logistics for team

Schedule and facilitate basketball tournaments and skill building sessions for community youth

Plan, Facilitate and advertise community tournaments

General responsibilities:

Coach APEX basketball team

Facilitate basketball tournaments

Maintain a participant roster

Facilitate fitness assessments

Assist with general program activities

Required Qualifications/Skills:

High School diploma/ or equivalent certification

Experience working with youth

Knowledge of basketball

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

College degree or some college credits

Experience coaching youth in an urban setting

Service Start Date: ASAP

Service End Date: Will vary based on organizational placement; no later than July 14, 2016.

Service Commitment: 900 hours/20 a week

Service Benefits:

Living Allowance PrivateCorps/OJJDP: Salary: $9.36/hr

All PrivateCorps Coaches will receive an hourly wage and an End of Service Term Award upon successfully completing their Up2Us Sports service term and requirements.
