ORGANIZATION: Friends of the Mississippi River

Volunteers are needed to haul out pre-cut buckthorn, a woody invasive chopped and lopped a few days before by Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Corps Minnesota crews.

We will be working in an Aquatic Management Area. AMAs are a special form of land protection meant to preserve shoreline property. The Vermillion River and this AMA is prized for its trophy brown trout -- something unimaginable in 1960, when the water quality was so poor the stream was considered unfit for any game fish.

Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) engages people to protect, restore and enhance the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities region.

Friends of the Mississippi River is proud to work with roughly 3,000 volunteers annually.

We keep volunteering simple, fun and satisfying -- there are no applications, and you can sign up for one event or several. We list events especially in need of volunteers here on VolunteerMatch.com, but maintain a full calendar of 60+ events a year at www.fmr.org/events.

Our project work includes conservation and restoration of natural areas and habitat, education on watershed protection issues, and organizing activities that connect the public to the Mississippi River.
