ServiceWorks at CPDC seeks engaged and enthusiastic adults to become Skill Building Trainers and Success Coaches to young adults in the DC metro area.
What is ServiceWorks? ServiceWorks is a groundbreaking, national program powered by AmeriCorps, Citi Foundation, and Points of Light Foundation that uses volunteer service as a strategy to equip 16-24 year-old Service Scholars with college and career readiness skills. Delivered locally through community engagement, training, and mentorship, under-resourced young adults within CPDC's affordable housing communities will obtain employability skills to advance their college and career goals. We are seeking professionals, like you, to serve as volunteer Skill Building Trainers and Success Coaches to work directly with young people in our communities.
Who is CPDC? Community Preservation Development Corporation (CPDC) is a local non-profit real estate developer dedicated to providing safe, high-quality, and affordable housing for low-and moderate-income individuals and families. Through innovation and partnership, CPDC strives to foster diverse, vibrant communities through resident and volunteer engagement. Since 2006, CPDC has leveraged volunteer time and talent to address critical community needs. Become a volunteer with ServiceWorks to ensure that CPDC and communities together, grow and thrive.
Skill Building Trainer responsibilities include:
Depending on availability volunteers can facilitate anywhere from 1-5 skill building workshops. Every workshop will be about an hour long but will also require additional prep time.
- Facilitate up to five workshops that are topical and interactive for Service Scholars
- Engage scholars using interactive tools, videos, activities, conversations, etc.
- Guide Scholars through conversations about community issues and their ability to impact them
- Assist in the construction and implementation of a scholar-led community service project
- Relate community engagement to their future success and 21st century skills in communication, leadership, and program management
Success Coach Responsibilities include:
Volunteers should be able to commit meeting with Scholars for an hour on a weekly basis for about 6 weeks. Every meeting will also require additional prep time.
- Work with Service Scholars in small groups to assist with goal-setting and action-planning
- Assist Scholars with resume building, interview skills, job/college applications, etc.
- Reaffirm how Scholars are gaining leadership and marketability skills from skill building portion of ServiceWorks
- Encourage the building and expanding of professional/personal networks
- Keep track and record progress of individual Scholars in online system
Qualifications:
- Complete application and pass the required background check
- Have experience and success in college and/or career preparedness
- Available during afternoon, evening, or weekend hours
- Excited and committed to forming meaningful relationships with youth aged 16-24
- Sensitive to needs of Scholars in urban environments and able to maintain confidentiality
- Comfortable speaking on experiences related to successes and challenges in professional life
- Strong public speaking and facilitation skills (Skill Building Trainer)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (Success Coach)
