Helping Hands

The St. Louis Empowerment Center is a recovery drop-in center for people who are mental health consumers or who have co-occurring disorders. Founded in 1996, the Empowerment Center is designed to meet the needs of St. Louis area residents who are mental health consumers through the self-help model.

For over thirty years, the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) of Greater St. Louis, the parent organization of the St. Louis Empowerment Center, has operated self-help groups in the St. Louis area. In that time, these consumer-run groups have assisted thousands of people by engendering within them a sense of compassionate community. While the mission of the DBSA has nominally been limited to providing self-help and mutual assistance to individuals with affective disorders, these groups have always been open to any mental health consumer capable of participating in the group process.

Currently we are in search of dedicated, kind, empathetic, and recovery-minded volunteers from all walks of life with an interest in facilitating self-help groups for the benefit of mental health consumers. No formal group facilitation experience is required (though it would certainly come in handy!). You will be provided with the requisite support and training necessary for you to feel entirely comfortable helping meetings run smoothy while ensuring that all voices within the group are heard. Everybody is very welcome to apply for this opportunity, though we would especially love to hear from individuals who are mental health consumers, have co-occuring disorders, or who are mental health professionals. As always, thank you so much for your extremely valuable time, and we hope you have a wonderful day!
