ORGANIZATION: Editha House

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 15 people are interested

Editha House was established in 2011 to provide affordable lodging for cancer and lung-transplant patients and caregivers who travel to Phoenix for medical treatment. Our house consists of sixteen guestrooms with private bathrooms and kitchens as well as community space.

We are seeking volunteers who are interested in helping to ease the burden of undergoing cancer treatment far from home by providing community support. The volunteer activities we have work well for small corporate or social groups as well as individuals. Many of our volunteer activities include options for in-kind donations, such as providing food, arts and crafts, welcome baskets, etc.

Some of the Volunteer Opportunities we have include:

1. Buy and prepare Welcome Baskets. Put together a creative box/basket/bag that we can give our guests upon arrival to the house, or on special occassions (such as New Years or Valentine's Day). The baskets can be any size and include items that a person traveling may need or want.

2. Create Inspirational Gift Cards with messages of hope for our guests.

3. Replenish our Community Kitchen. We keep a Community Kitchen with items that are left from previous guests or donated from the community. The kitchen can be refreshed or restocked with grocery items provided by your group. Your group can come in and re-stock yourself, complete with fresh flowers, or you can drop them off after holding a food drive for us.

4. Create Snack Packs for guests to take with them to the hospital. Guests often travel to the hospital early in the morning and return to the house late at night. Prepare a pre-made bag or box for them to take with them for fresh fruit/sandwiches/snacks/drinks etc. that they can eat during the day.

5. Hold a Wish-List Drive at your company/organization and bring items our house with you to your Volunteer Event! (Items we need are available on our website, or you can inquire what our most current needs are by talking with staff.)

6. Cook a Meal! Prepare a dinner for our guests. Community or corporate volunteers come to the house once per week to cook and enjoy a meal with our guests.

7. Decorate the House. Help create a festive atmosphere around certain holidays.

Finally, your group can combine any of the above activities to create your own unique volunteer event!

Our house is grateful for Volunteers who provide a sense of community for guests who are undergoing cancer treatments far from home. If you have a group of people looking for a meaningful volunteer activity, please contact us today!
