Students will participate in a 60 minute hands-on workshop, where they will apply the fundamentals of the Engineering Design Process. The project will be to create a flash light, using supplies selected from a range of materials. Students will have ownership of their projects and take home the finished product. The students will also attend a 25 minute science demonstration that focuses on electrical energy transfer, and the difference between alternating and direct current. The demonstration features a Tesla coil, a Van de Graaff generator and a Jacob's ladder high voltage traveling arc which demonstrate the transfer of electrical energy, and excites students about core physical science concepts.
Workshops are on specific Wednesdays and Thursdays. One volunteer per workshop is needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with teaching and hands-on activities
- Interact with the students enhancing their understanding of the engineering process.

Mission Statement
Our mission is simple: to make Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) come alive. The Science Center envisions a community where all people value science, technology, engineering and math to inform decision-making and enrich lives.
Description
Great Lakes Science Center, home of the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, makes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) come alive for more than 300,000 visitors a year through hundreds of hands-on exhibits, temporary exhibitions, the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater, historic Steamship William G. Mather, daily science demonstrations, seasonal camps, and more. The Science Center is funded in part by the citizens of Cuyahoga County through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. Visit GreatScience.com for more information.
Volunteers are an integral part of our workshops, science shows, special events and the overall welcoming atmosphere of fun and curiosity cultivated by the Science Center. Volunteers assist our guest engagement staff, man our information desk, lead tours aboard the historic Steamship William G. Mather and so much more. Our Volunteers enjoy bringing our exhibits to life with additional information and new ways to interact with and learn from them. Creating amazing stories for our visitors through answering questions, one-on-one interaction, and mind-blowing science demonstrations ensures that both the volunteer's, and the guest's, experience is a memorable one.
