The Wildlife Garden at Merrimac Farm is an ongoing project that creates an area in the community where people and the environment can come together as one. The Wildlife Garden showcases Virginia’s native plants, creating a diverse habitat for birds, butterflies, moths, turtles and amphibians, while also providing a high quality natural area for families to watch wildlife in a public area that is easy to access. In addition to the aesthetic beauty it provides, it also demonstrates how any suburban or rural yard can be transformed from sterile to fruitful land, so that adults and children alike can delight in the wonders of nature.

Over the past few years, we’ve planted hundreds of trees, shrubs, and perennials, and the Wildlife Garden is looking terrific with new blooms as well as a variety of birds and butterfly species. Now we need your help with a variety of tasks such as weeding, pruning, and watering to ensure that the garden continues to provide all of its services to the environment and the community. Come on down to the Wildlife Gardens at Merrimac Farm, and make sure to wear long pants, sturdy shoes, long socks, and a hat to keep off that sun! The Stone House Visitor Center can be found by driving to the VERY end of Deepwood lane.

We are so excited to see what the future of this garden holds, and hope that you will come out and join us to keep our community beautiful.
