NOW RECRUITING VOLUNTEER TAX PREPARERS, INTAKE SPECIALISTS, GREETERS, SCHEDULERS, DIGITAL ASSISTANTS, ADMINISTRATIVE VOLUNTEERS, AND TRANSLATORS FOR THE 2024 TAX SEASON

The Fremont Family Resource Center's (FRC) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free tax preparation and asset building services to taxpayers with low to moderate income, non-English speaking persons, and individuals with disabilities. The FRC VITA Program has been in operation since 2002 and is the largest VITA site in Alameda County.

We have virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities.

Volunteer Tax Preparer Responsibilities:
  • Ensure customers qualify for VITA services
  • Ensure VITA participants have all the necessary documents to complete their tax returns
  • Prepare tax returns for all qualifying taxpayers, using an on-line software program
  • Answer tax questions
Volunteer Tax Preparer Qualifications:
  • Must attend mandatory in-person and/or virtual training sessions, and achieve a passing score on the IRS Ethics test, and VITA Advance Tax Preparer test (open book test)
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills
  • Experience working with a diverse population
  • Intermediate to advance level computer skills REQUIRED
  • Tax preparation experience is preferred, but not required
  • Virtual or in-person volunteer opportunities

Greeter Responsibilities:
  • Welcomes VITA customers; take customers' temperature and ask health screening questions; manages flow of incoming customers
  • Maintains customer sign-in sheet; determines language needs; provides packet of information and intake forms
  • Assigns customers to Intake Specialists and/or Tax Preparers
  • Position requires in-person service

Greeter Qualifications:
  • Strong interpersonal relationship and communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Experience working with a diverse population
  • Must complete IRS Ethics Test and achieve a passing score (open book test)
In-Take Specialist Responsibilities:
  • Meets with customers to verify eligibility for VITA services; ensure customers have all the necessary tax documents, and identification needed for tax preparation
  • Review intake forms for completeness
  • Position requires in-person service

In-Take Specialist Qualifications:
  • Strong interpersonal relationship and communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Experience working with a diverse population
  • Must attend mandatory in-person and/or virtual training sessions to become knowledgeable of process
  • Must complete IRS Ethics, and In-Take and Interview tests and achieve a passing score (open book test)
Scheduler Responsibilities:
  • Retrieve voicemail messages and return customer calls using Google Voice
  • Schedule appointments for drop-off/pick-up service and in-person tax preparation
  • Maintain an online call log
  • This is a virtual position

Scheduler Qualifications:
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Intermediate to advance computer skills
  • Must complete IRS Ethics test and achieve a passing score (open book test)

Digital Assistant Responsibilities:
  • Scan and upload customer tax documents, IDs, and intake forms
  • This is an in-person volunteer opportunity

Digital Assistant Qualifications:
  • Intermediate to advance computer skills
  • Organized
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Must complete IRS Ethics test and achieve a passing score (open book test)

Administrative Volunteer Responsibilities:
  • General administrative duties: Maintain volunteer and client tax files, track volunteer hours, assist with set-up and break-down of VITA sites and training sites, assist with volunteer recruitment, distribute marketing materials, retrieve voicemail messages and respond to customer questions, make copies, inventory and order VITA supplies and forms, create flyers and/or signage using MS Word, and other duties as assigned.
  • This position will volunteer in-person, with some opportunities to work virtually

Administrative Volunteer Qualifications:
  • Good organizational skills
  • Intermediate to advance computer skills and knowledge of MS Office Suite and Google Suite
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Must complete IRS Ethics test and achieve a passing score (open book test)

Volunteer Translators:
Bi-lingual translators translate either in-person or via phone for customers, VITA volunteers and staff. Bi-lingual translators needed in Spanish, Punjabi, Mandarin, Farsi, Dari, and American Sign Language. Must complete IRS Ethics test and achieve a passing score (open book test).


We have VITA sites in Fremont, Newark, and Union City. We also have virtual opportunities.

Please note: Volunteers must agree to volunteer a minimum of 3-5 hours per week starting February 1 through April 15, 2024.

Description

The Fremont FRC is a collaborative of 25+ City, County, State, and non-profit social service agencies working together under one roof to serve families in Southern Alameda County, including Fremont, Union City, Newark and Hayward. The City of Fremont’s Human Services Department is the lead agency - the FRC Core Team - and provides the key staff who administers the FRC and coordinates the many initiatives underway at the Center.
