Mission Statement

Culinary Arts Kids Eat (CAKE), is a nonprofit organization aimed at using the culinary arts to engage, educate, and enrich students in South Los Angeles by teaching life skills and providing them with practical knowledge of the restaurant and hospitality industries.

Description

CAKE currently operates an enhanced culinary arts curriculum out of Santee Education Complex in South Los Angeles. CAKE has partnered with the California Restaurant Association Education Foundation (CRAEF) as a participant in its Pro-Start program and designed its curriculum based on their teachings combined with those of the Culinary Institute of America. The curriculum is offered as a three-year program to high school students and includes a strong emphasis on the areas of health, wellness, and social entrepreneurship.

In addition to the three year culinary arts program, in March 2015 CAKE launched its After School with CAKE and After Work with CAKE program. The 12-week program, offered three days a week (M,T,W) exposes kids to various physical activities and wellness activities in addition to the core culinary arts curriculum. On Wednesdays, parents and family members are invited to attend the class and have an opportunity to cook healthy meals in the kitchen with their kids.

In Summer 2015 CAKE will be launching its 6-week Summer Program.

Aside from learning an invaluable, marketable skill set that will allow them to contribute immediately to the restaurant and hospitality workforce, CAKE also provides students with the life skills to navigate the negative pressures of they can encounter in South Los Angeles, ensuring they can realize their fullest potential.
