The LearningWorks AIMS HIGH AmeriCorps program is a school turnaround initiative where members provide direct support to students and build school capacity to engage individuals and community members in support of school improvement and student achievement. The program offers AmeriCorps members a variety of opportunities to impact schools and students, including developing and expanding tutoring, mentoring and enrichment programs at five schools across Maine. AIMS HIGH AmeriCorps members also support program documentation, volunteer recruitment, assisting with training volunteers and participation in leadership development trainings.

The program is seeking a full time AmeriCorps member in the Greater Portland Area who will focus on community outreach and volunteer engagement at partner schools, to increase school capacity in utilizing volunteers and engaging the community in overall school success. Full time AmeriCorps member commit to a minimum of 1700 hours of service over the course of a year and serve on average 40 hours per week. The AmeriCorps member will work closely with school based community coordinators and volunteer managers to assess needs and develop plans for AmeriCorps community engagement efforts. Plans could include mapping existing volunteer recruitment and management practices, helping school staff institutionalize best practices, identifying new community resources to support schools, and supporting other AIMS HIGH AmeriCorps members in community engagement activities. The member may also serve students together with other AIMS HIGH members through direct academic tutoring and mentoring when possible.

The Full time Community and Volunteer Engagement AmeriCorps member will work collaboratively in a team of other AIMS HIGH members, school staff and AIMS HIGH program staff. The member will primarily split their time between three Greater Portland Area Elementary schools, East End Community School, Riverton Elementary and Kaler Elementary.

Qualifications:

  • Self motivated with a high degree of flexibility.
  • Clear, concise oral and written communication.
  • Ability to independently manage time, set priorities, plan & implement projects effectively.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field preferred.
  • Be willing to have a full FBI and SBI background check as well as a National Sex Offender Search check.
  • Be at least 17 years of age at the time of enrollment.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • Personal transportation to and between school sites.

Essential Functionsinclude the ability to:

  • Effectively communicate with teachers, administrators, school staff and other AmeriCorps members to set priorities and strategies based upon individual school need and context.
  • Conduct community and parent outreach and engage community members, parents and family members in students’ education.
  • Speak clearly and effectively to groups (large & small).
  • Work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Facilitate meetings of diverse participants.
  • Use basic computer software such as Microsoft Office and navigate the internet.
  • Be able to serve consistently and reliably.
  • Abide by all AmeriCorps service rules and service provisions.
  • Submit timesheets every two weeks.

Desired Functions include ability to:

  • Recruit and manage volunteers.
  • Promote and support service-learning.
  • Develop and execute enrichment activities and lesson plans.

Required Trainings and meetings that AIMS HIGH Members will participate in:

  • Program orientation
  • Monthly team meetings
  • AmeriCorps training and events with the Maine State Commission for Community Service
  • Community service activities
  • Other events as assigned including meetings or functions (occasionally on evenings or weekends)

Benefits and Terms:

  • A taxable living allowance of $12,530 for the term of service
  • Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members/leaders receive an education award of an amount up to $5,730. The education award can be used to repay qualified student loans or for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational or trade school. The education award is taxable in the year that it is used.
  • Loan forbearance. (After successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps may pay a portion or all the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable.)
  • Basic ACA compliant medical insurance. (Covers members only, not dependents).
  • Mileage reimbursement for travel between program sites, meetings and/or assignments.
  • Child care allowance for those who qualify.
  • Professional development, trainings and networking opportunities.
