Description of Role:

The Seed to Supper Classes Co-Facilitator will be working with theLearningGardens’ Family Engagement Coordinator (January-June), providing support in communications, facilitation of Seed to Supper Classes, Classroom Preparation and outreach to various community members on behalf of the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation. This position will have the flexibility to provide support in and out of the office, will be encouraged to have a strong presence within classes, and will be given flexibility in hours served. This volunteer must attend trainings, orientation, and be able to pass a background screening while working with youth.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Seed to Supper Classes Co-Facilitator needs to commit to a minimum of 3hours a week for 5weeks at a time. There will be 4 classes over the year, monthly starting in January.

  • Screening and orientation/ training will take place November 1-10th.

  • Assist in providing outreach and communications to theSalem-KeizerSchool Districtparents.
  • Co-Lead the 5 week Seed to Supper classes while working closely with families on basic gardening techniques in thePacific Northwest.
  • Assist in classroom, snack and potential childcare preparation before participants arrive. Transportation provided for volunteer.

Skills Needed:

  • 2.25 GPA requirement, part or full time students are encouraged to apply, BUT NOT REQUIRED.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and non-verbal. Bilingual Preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of gardening in thePacific Northwest.
  • Must model positive values through priorities and choices, maintaining confidence to work unsupervised on occasion.
  • Outgoing, energetic, and passionate about working with diverse populations with public health, gardening and nutrition.

Desired Experience:

  • Must be a 18 years or older to apply.
  • Personal or professional experience with farming, gardening, or public health.
  • Previous volunteer experience with the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation, the Salem Keizer School District, or with community gardens.

Minimum Time Commitment:

  • Average 3 hours a week minimum commitment over 5weeks.
  • Available Office hours are: 8:30am to 5:30pm, Monday through Saturday.
  • Class hours are tentative to be 6pm-8pm. Choice of day is to be determined.

Founded in 1982, the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation (SKEF) exists to support the students and employees of the Salem-Keizer School District in the State of Oregon. SKEF is the oldest community-based non-profit organization in Oregon dedicated to enriching the quality of education in its local public schools.
